Changing LGBT and queer urban spaces: Toronto, Canada & Sydney, Australia

This research project examines the wide array of transformative processes currently affecting Toronto's gay village in myriad ways. Many gay villages in North America, Europe and Australia appear to be experiencing some form of ‘decline’ as progressive legislative and social changes are providing greater possibilities for LGBT and queer people to be visible (and accepted). I am currently working on an international collaborative project with Dr. Andrew Gorman-Murray, University of Western Sydney that considers the similarities and differences in the changing sexual and gendered landscapes in Sydney and Toronto through the utilization of a ‘mobilities’ approach to shifting socio-spatial relations in inner city suburban neighbourhoods. We have a number of journal and book chapter publications and this scholarship has been funded by Canadian SSHRC funding and two Australian grants (1) the International Research Initiative Scheme (2012) and the Australian Endeavour Research Fellowship (2015).
